After these things, God spoke to Abram in a dream.
He said, "Do not be afraid, Abram. I will protect you and give you a very big gift."
Abram said, "Lord God, what will you give me? I have no child, and Eliezer from Damascus will get my house."
Abram said, "I have no baby, and the child born in my house will be my heir."
God said to him, "This man will not be your heir. Your own child will be your heir."
God took him outside and said, "Look at the sky and count the stars if you can. Your children will be like them."
Abram believed God, and God counted it as right.
God said, "I am the Lord who brought you from Ur in Chaldea to give you this land."
Abram said, "Lord God, how will I know I will get this land?"
God said, "Bring a three-year-old cow, a three-year-old goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtle dove, and a young pigeon."
Abram cut the animals in half and put the parts opposite each other.
He did not cut the birds.
Birds of prey came down on the bodies, and Abram chased them away.
When the sun went down, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and he felt a very strong fear in the dark.
God said, "Know for sure that your children will live in another land. They will serve the people there and be hurt for four hundred years."
God said, "I will judge the people they serve, and later your children will leave with many things."
God said, "You will die in peace and be buried old."
God said, "In the fourth generation they will come back here. The Amorites have not done many bad things yet."
When the sun went down and it was dark, there was a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch that went between the animal parts.
That day God made a promise to Abram.
He said, "I give this land to your children, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates."
He said, "I give it to the people of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaim, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites."
