And the sky and the land were done, and all the things in them.
On the seventh day God finished the work he made; he rested on the seventh day from all his work.
God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because he rested on that day from all the work he had made.
These are the stories of the sky and the land when they were made; it was the day that Jehovah God made the earth and the sky.
At that time no plant of the field was on the land, and no grass of the field had grown; because Jehovah God had not yet made it rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground.
But a mist went up from the land and watered the whole face of the ground.
Then Jehovah God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed life into his nose, and the man became a living person.
And Jehovah God planted a garden in the east, in Eden, and there he put the man he had made.
And Jehovah God made every tree grow out of the ground that was nice to look at and good for food; the tree of life was also in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and bad.
A river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it split and became four rivers.
The name of the first is Pishon; it goes around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
The gold of that land is good; there is bdellium and the onyx stone.
The name of the second river is Gihon; it goes around the whole land of Cush.
The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one that goes toward Assyria.
The fourth river is the Euphrates.
And Jehovah God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to care for it and keep it.
Jehovah God told the man, "You may eat from every tree of the garden freely."
God also said, "But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad; if you eat from it, you will die."
Jehovah God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make a helper for him who is right for him."
Jehovah God made every animal of the field and every bird of the sky from the ground, and brought them to the man to see what name he would give them.
The man gave names to all the animals, to the birds of the sky, and to every field animal; but no helper was found for the man.
Jehovah God made the man sleep deeply, and while he slept he took one of his ribs and closed the place with flesh.
Then Jehovah God made a woman from the rib he had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.
The man said, "This is the bone of my bones and the flesh of my flesh; she will be called Woman because she was taken out of Man."
That is why a man leaves his father and his mother and is joined to his wife, and they become one flesh.
They were both naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.
