Abraham left that place and went to the land of the South.
He lived near Kadesh and Shur and stayed in Gerar.
Abraham said that Sarah was his sister.
The king of Gerar, Abimelech, sent people and took Sarah.
God came to Abimelech at night in a dream.
God said, "Look, you will die because you took a woman who is another man's wife."
Abimelech had not been near her.
He said, "Lord, will you kill a good country?"
Did he not tell me that she was his sister?
And she said, "He is my brother."
I did this with a clean heart and clean hands.
God said in the dream, "Yes, I know you did this with a clean heart.
I kept you from doing wrong.
That is why I did not let you touch her."
Now give the man's wife back.
He is a man who talks to God, and he will pray for you, and you will live.
If you do not give her back, know that you and all that belong to you will die.
Abimelech woke early in the morning.
He called all his helpers and told them everything.
The men were very afraid.
Then Abimelech called Abraham and said, "What have you done to us?"
He said, "How did I hurt you so you brought a big wrong on me and on my land?"
"You did things to me that should not be done."
Abimelech asked Abraham, "What did you see that made you do this?"
Abraham said, "I thought the people here did not respect God and they would kill me because of my wife."
Also, she is really my sister.
She is the daughter of my father but not the daughter of my mother.
She became my wife.
When God made me leave my father's house, I told her, "Tell the people we meet that I am your brother to be kind to me."
Abimelech gave Abraham sheep, cows, men servants, and women servants.
He gave Sarah back to Abraham.
Abimelech said, "Look, my land is open to you.
Live where you like."
He said to Sarah, "I gave your brother a thousand pieces of silver.
This is for you so the people with you see that you are free and safe."
Abraham prayed to God.
God made Abimelech, his wife, and his women servants well, and they had children.
Because of Sarah, Abraham's wife, God had stopped the women in Abimelech's house from having babies.
