Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob.
Isaac sent Jacob away to Paddan-aram so Jacob could find a wife there.
Isaac told Jacob not to marry a girl from the Canaan people.
Jacob listened to his father and his mother.
Jacob went to Paddan-aram.
Esau saw that the Canaan girls did not make Isaac happy.
Esau went to Ishmael.
Esau took Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael, as another wife.
Jacob left Beersheba.
He went toward Haran.
He came to a place and stayed there all night because the sun had gone down.
He put a stone under his head and went to sleep.
He dreamed of a ladder standing on the earth with the top reaching to heaven.
Angels of God went up and down on the ladder.
God stood above it and said, "I am the Lord, the God of Abraham and Isaac.
I will give this land to you and your children.
Your children will be many like the dust of the earth.
You will spread out to the west, east, north, and south.
All families on earth will be blessed through you and your children.
I am with you and will keep you everywhere you go.
I will bring you back to this land.
I will not leave you until I do what I promised."
Jacob woke up and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it."
He was afraid and said, "This place is very scary.
It is the house of God.
This is the gate of heaven."
Jacob got up early.
He took the stone from under his head and made it a pillar.
He poured oil on the top of it.
He called that place Bethel.
The city was first called Luz.
Jacob made a promise.
He said, "If God is with me and keeps me on this road, and gives me food and clothes,
and I return to my father's house in peace, and the Lord will be my God,
then this stone will be God's house.
I will give one tenth of all you give me to you."
