Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming with four hundred men.
He put the children with Leah, Rachel, and the two women who work for them.
He put the two women and their children at the front, then Leah and her children, and Rachel and Joseph at the back.
He walked in front of them and bowed down seven times when he got near his brother.
Esau ran to meet him.
He hugged him and kissed him, and they cried.
Esau looked at the women and children and asked, "Who are these with you?"
Jacob said, "These are the children God has given me."
The two women came close with their children and bowed down.
Leah and her children came close and bowed down.
Then Joseph and Rachel came close and bowed down.
Esau said, "Why do you have so many people with you?"
Jacob said, "I want to be kind in your eyes."
Esau said, "I have enough, my brother. Keep what you have."
Jacob said, "No, please take my gift. I saw your face like I see God's face. You were kind to me. God was kind to me, and I have enough."
He kept asking, and Esau took it.
Jacob said, "Let us go; I will walk in front of you."
Esau said, "My lord knows the children are young, and the sheep and cows have babies. If the animals run too fast one day, they will die."
"Please go in front of me," Jacob said.
"I will walk slowly with the animals and the children until I come to you in Seir."
Esau said, "Let me leave some people with you."
Jacob said, "No need. I want to be kind in your eyes."
Esau went back to Seir that day.
Jacob went to Succoth.
He built a house and small tents for his animals.
That is why the place is called Succoth.
Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem in Canaan after he came from Paddan-aram, and he stayed near the city.
He bought the land where he had put his tent from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, for one hundred pieces of money.
He made an altar there and called it El-Elohe-Israel.
