God said to Jacob, "Wake up. Go to Beth-el. Live there. Make a stone place for God there. God came to you when you ran from Esau your brother."
Jacob told his family and all the people with him, "Take away the strange gods you have. Clean your bodies. Change your clothes. Let us go to Beth-el. I will make a place for God there. God listened to me when I was in trouble and was with me on my way."
They gave Jacob all the strange gods they had and the rings from their ears. Jacob hid them under the oak near Shechem.
They began to walk. People around them felt fear of God and they did not chase Jacob's sons.
Jacob came to Luz in the land of Canaan. This place is Beth-el. He and all the people with him came there.
He built a stone place there and named it El-beth-el. God showed himself there when Jacob ran from his brother.
Deborah, the nurse of Rebekah, died. They buried her under the oak below Beth-el. People called that tree Allon-bacuth.
God came to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-aram and said good things to him.
God said, "Your name is Jacob. From now on your name will be Israel." Jacob named himself Israel.
God said, "I am the great God. Have many children. You will be the father of a nation and of many nations. Kings will come from you."
God said, "I gave the land to Abraham and Isaac. I will give it to you and your children after you."
God left him there where they talked.
Jacob put a stone there where they spoke. He poured wine on it and put oil on it.
Jacob named the place Beth-el where God talked with him.
They left Beth-el. They still had a long walk to Ephrath. Rachel was having a hard birth.
When Rachel had hard birth, the woman who helped her said, "Do not be afraid. You will have another son now."
When Rachel's life left her and she died, she called the baby Ben-oni. But his father named him Benjamin.
Rachel died and they buried her on the way to Ephrath. This place is Bethlehem.
Jacob put a stone there on her grave. People still call that stone the pillar of Rachel's grave.
Israel moved and put his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
While Israel lived there, Reuben went to sleep with Bilhah, his father's helper. Israel heard about it.
Jacob had twelve sons.
Leah's sons were Reuben, Jacob's first son, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.
Rachel's sons were Joseph and Benjamin.
Bilhah, Rachel's helper, had Dan and Naphtali.
Zilpah, Leah's helper, had Gad and Asher.
These are the sons of Jacob born to him in Paddan-aram.
Jacob went to his father Isaac in Mamre, to Kiriath-arba. This place is Hebron. Abraham and Isaac lived there.
Isaac lived one hundred eighty years.
Isaac died. He was old and had lived a full life. Esau and Jacob buried him.
