After two years the king had a dream by the river.
First he saw seven fat cows eat grass near the water.
Then he saw seven thin cows come up and eat the fat cows.
The thin cows were still thin after they ate the fat cows.
The king woke up.
He slept again and saw seven big ears of grain on one plant.
Then seven small dry ears of grain came and ate the big ears.
The king woke up and knew it was a dream.
In the morning the king was sad.
He called his wise men and magicians, but no one could say what the dream meant.
Then the cup keeper remembered Joseph, a Hebrew man in prison.
Joseph once told the cup keeper and the baker what their dreams meant.
The cup keeper told the king.
Joseph was brought from the prison.
The king told Joseph his dream.
Joseph said God would give the king a good answer.
Joseph said both parts of the dream were the same.
The seven good cows and the seven good ears meant seven good years.
The seven thin cows and the thin ears meant seven years of hunger.
Joseph said the king must save food in the good years.
He said to choose a wise man to help and to keep food in the cities.
The king liked this idea.
He made Joseph ruler over all the land.
Joseph was thirty years old.
He went around the land.
He saved food in the cities for seven years.
He saved so much that it was like the sand by the sea.
Joseph had two sons with Asenath.
He named the first Manasseh because God made him forget hard times.
He named the second Ephraim because God made him strong in hard land.
Then the seven good years ended.
The seven hungry years began.
All the land had no food, but Egypt had food for its people.
People from all over came to Egypt to buy grain.
