Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brothers, and their sheep, and their cows, and all that they have, come out of the land of Canaan, and they are in the land of Goshen.
And he took five men from his brothers and showed them to Pharaoh.
And Pharaoh asked his brothers, What is your work?
They answered Pharaoh, We and our fathers are sheep keepers.
They told Pharaoh, We came to live in the land because there is no grass for our sheep, for the dry time is bad in Canaan: now we ask you, let us live in the land of Goshen.
Pharaoh told Joseph, Your father and your brothers are with you; the land of Egypt is before you; let your father and brothers live in the best part; let them live in Goshen; and if you know good men among them, make them leaders over my cattle.
Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and put him before Pharaoh; Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
Pharaoh asked Jacob, How many days have you lived?
Jacob said to Pharaoh, I have lived one hundred thirty years; my life days are few and hard, and they are not like the days of my fathers when they lived.
Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from Pharaoh.
Joseph put his father and his brothers, and gave them land in Egypt, in the best part, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh said.
Joseph fed his father, and brothers, and all his father's family, with bread, by families.
There was no bread in all the land, for the dry time was very hard, so Egypt and Canaan were weak because of the dry time.
Joseph took all the money found in Egypt and Canaan for the grain they bought, and he brought the money to Pharaoh's house.
When the money was gone in Egypt and Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, Give us bread, why should we die before you; our money is gone.
Joseph said, Give your animals, and I will give you bread for them if money is gone.
They brought their animals to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread for the horses, and the sheep, and the cows, and the donkeys: he fed them with bread for all their animals that year.
When that year was finished, they came to him in the second year and said, My lord, we cannot hide from you that our money is gone, and the animals are yours; nothing is left before you but our bodies and our land: why should we die before you, we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants to Pharaoh: give us seed so we can live, and not die, and the land not be empty.
Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; the Egyptians sold all their fields because the dry time was hard, and the land became Pharaoh's.
He put the people in cities from one end of Egypt to the other.
Only the priests did not sell their land, for they had food from Pharaoh and ate what Pharaoh gave, so they did not sell their land.
Joseph told the people, I bought you and your land for Pharaoh today: here is seed for you, and you will plant the land.
When you gather the crops, you will give one fifth to Pharaoh, and four parts will be yours for seed and for your food, and for your families, and for the food of your little ones.
They said, You saved our lives: let us find favor with you, and we will be Pharaoh's servants.
Joseph made a law for the land of Egypt until this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; only the priests' land did not become Pharaoh's.
Israel lived in Egypt, in Goshen; they got land there, and they had many children.
Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years: his life days were one hundred forty and seven years.
The time came for Israel to die: he called Joseph and said, If I am pleasing to you, put your hand under my thigh, and be kind and true with me: do not bury me in Egypt.
When I sleep with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt, and bury me where they are buried.
Joseph said, I will do as you say.
Israel said, Swear to me; and he swore.
Israel bowed himself on the bed's head.
